16. Circular Valle Aurina Tour into the Valle di Villgraten

Start from the Bike Hotel Alpenblick ****s along the cycle path to San Candido (1,150), from there to Sillian/East Tyrol (1,100) and continue to Heinfels. Take the funicular up to the Thurntaler at 2,300 metres. A fantastic 360° view awaits at the Sillian mountain before the trail continues down to Ausservillgraten (1,200). From Ausservillgraten continue to Innervillgraten (1,390 m), first follow the road for around 1.7 km into the valley to the crossroads, follow the signpost to “Hochberg/Lahnberg”. Now follow the tarmacked road with a moderate climb towards Kamelisenalm (1,973), past beautifully situated mountain farms until you reach the Schettlet farm (1,740 m). The very easily negotiable forest road starts from here, it is occasionally flat then moderately steep again until you reach the beautifully situated Kamelisenalm (1,973 m). Then, follow the signpost to “Oberstaller”, a short way down, then flat along a heavily overgrown path until it turns into a steep mountain track (1,940 m) after around 500 metres. Follow this for about 700 meters, pushing or carrying your bike. The forest path starts again now, follow it downwards to a distinctive crossing at about 1,880 m and from here continue to the right, moderately increasing up to an altitude of 1,940. Now follow the signpost “Oberstaller” along a sometimes slightly steeper mountain track, again push or carry your bike, downwards. After around 800 metres you finally reach the beautifully situated alpine meadows of Oberstaller (1,864) and have completed all the difficult parts of this tour. Now, the tour takes you from Oberstaller down a tarmacked road, past Unterstalleralm, through Arntal until you hit the B-road at Matten again. Follow this down the valley back to Heinfels/Sillian and along the cycle path to Versciaco.
From here, take the funicular to Monte Elmo (2,040) and from there continue via the Baita del Cacciatore hut back to Sesto/Moso to Bike Hotel Alpenblick ****s.

Refreshment huts: Thurntahler, Jausenstation Unterstalleralm, Ristorante Monte Elmo, Baita del Cacciatore hut, Gasthof Waldruhe

Funicular railway: master approx. 1,800 m of difference in altitude using the funiculars

Summary:
This MTB tour is brought alive by the wonderful landscape and offers lots of indescribable memories. The magnificent scenery, especially the idyllic Kamelisenalm as well as the alpine meadows of Ober- and Unterstaller, contribute to the experience. Although the two carrying/pushing sections are a bit of a pain, they can be easily tackled without major difficulties. Technically, this tour is also very easy as you cycle along tarmacked or forest paths except for the two pushing sections. Overall, this is a tip for all bikers who do not mind sometimes having to push or carry their bikes as experiencing the scenery is reward for all the effort.
